TOXICOLOGICAL STUDY OF CITRAL AND OTHER MONOTERPENES FOUND IN ESSENTIAL OILS

DESCRIPTION: Although essential oils and various monoterpenes extracted from them are used widely as flavouring additives in the food industry and as fragrances in cosmetics, detergents, and other household products, relatively little research has been done on the toxicology of this group of substances. The objective of this project is to investigate the toxicological profile of these compounds in order to acess their risks for human health.

MAIN ADVANTAGES:

1. To provide a better evaluation of the risks posed to human health by these compounds;

2. To allow for safer use of them in foodstuffs, beverages, and home products, in terms of protection for consumers' health;

3. To provide positive results for the marketing of such products, which are economically important for Brazil.

MAIN APPLICATIONS: Use of safer flavouring additives in the food and beverage industries; and use of safer fragrances in the cosmetics and household products industries.

STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT: The project is underway and should be concluded within the next two years.
