Subject: Frequestly Asked Questions on 'tdr-scientists' list
Dear tdr-scientists,
Herewith the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about this List:
1. How does this List work?
Since 7 July 1995, the tdr-scientists list has been automated to
function as part of WHO's MAJORDOMO lists. (Thanks to WHO/ISM.)
- Members alone can post messages
to TDR-SCIENTISTS@WHO.CH
- Members alone can obtain fellow members' email addresses
with "who tdr-scientists" (without quotations) sent to
majordomo@who.ch
- Frequently Asked Questions (0tdrsci.faq), i.e. this file,
can be obtained by a GET command to majordomo.who.ch
"get tdr-scientists 0tdrsci.faq"
- Posted messages are indexed daily, and can be obtained by
"index tdr-scientists" command; and subsequently by
specific "get tdr-scientists ..filename.." command(s).
- Subscribe/unsubscribe commands are processed instantly
when you send such a command to the majordomo, e.g.
"subscribe tdr-scientists" to majordomo@who.ch
If you use REPLY MODE to a posted message, your answer will go
only to the originator, not to all the addresses.
2. Is the List moderated? Censored?
Absolutely not. We trust the good intent of any message posted
to the List, in the interest of the t.d.r. scientific community,
and the TDR programme.
Because it is not censored, you may receive some mis-directed
messages (like some people sending administrative messages to
the List itself rather than to MAJORDOMO@who.ch.) Please
disregard these. We take care of such messages here.
3. What does TDR expect from this List?
This will be dictated by the good sense of the subscribers. We
hope the List will mature with practical uses by you and by the
TDR secretariat. May we suggest at least that:
a. Messages should be short (Remember in some countries users
are paying for e-mail per every word they receive!).
b. And self-contained. Kindly put your e-mail address IN THE
BODY of the message text also.
4. If I have a question to TDR staff, can I send them e-mail direct?
E-mail is considered by the TDR secretariat as "a communication
tool somewhere between Voice-mail and a Fax". All TDR
professionals have a VAX account (lastname@who.ch). E-mail from
developing countries are taken as a substitute for Fax, so you
can send even OFFICIAL notes (except of course where a signature
is legally required, in which case the signed letter should
follow.)
Three functional email boxes exist, and opened every day:
- TDRNEWS@who.ch by TDR Communications Unit, handling
general queries on TDR, distribution of
documents, and proposal forms.
- TDRGRANT@who.ch for query on TDR grant deadlines, etc.
- TDRSUP@who.ch for query/order of supplies on projects.
5. Does TDR offer online information services such as Gopher/WWW?
TDR's Gopher service has existed since 1993. Network resources
information reported by the t.d.r. community exists, in a Web
page, since February 1995. The pointers to these are at:
http://www.who.ch/programmes/tdr/TDR_homepage.html
These services are still experimental. Your interest and
guidance would help their development.
