The Toxoplasma gondii Project
Project Contacts
Genome database (ToxoDB)
Using the highly successful genome database software AceDB, ToxoDB contains genome information on the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii viewable in graphic format.
Karyotype mapping
A molecular karyotype of T.gondii has been generated by pulse field gel electrophoresis and Southern hybridization. Chromosome specific probes are listed in the Locus class of ToxoDB and are available from David Sibley
Genetic Linkage Map
A rudimentary linkage map has been established for T.gondii using RFLP markers. The genome consists of 11 nuclear chromosomes ranging from 2 to >10MB. The total haploid genome size is estimated at 70-80MB. Chromosome specific probes are listed in the Locus class of ToxoDB and are available from David Sibley
Population Biology and Strain Identification
T.gondii has a highly clonal population structure characterized by three clonal lineages as shown by RFLP and multi-locus isoenzyme analysis. Reference strains and PCR-based RFLP markers are available for strain typing from David Sibley
EST sequencing
T.gondii ESTs are being sequenced through a co-operative program between Cambridge University (Jim Ajioka), Stanford University (John Boothroyd) and Washington University (David Sibley and Bob Waterston). This project is jointly funded by Merck Research Labs and the National Institutes of Health. The plan includes sequencing of 10,000 tachyzoite cDNAs and 5,000 bradyzoite cDNAs. Current entries may be viewed via the EBI's SRS server or via NCBI's text search facility.
